Starlink Mini on a Truck Camper: What Actually Works Off-Grid

I have run a Starlink Mini on the roof of my truck camper since close to launch, when the dish still cost $599. It now sells for somewhere in the $199 to $299 range depending on the promotion, which makes it a far easier recommendation than it was when I bought mine.
Most of what is written about the Mini is either a spec sheet or a first-week unboxing. This is what I have actually learned running it as my real connection from the road.
Skip the AC brick and run USB-C
This is the single most useful thing I can tell you, and almost nobody mentions it.
The Mini is natively a 12V device. If you power it from a battery pack using the included AC brick, you are converting the battery’s DC output up to AC, then back down to 12V at the dish. You pay a conversion penalty in both directions, and that penalty comes straight out of your battery.
Running a USB-C cable from the battery to the dish skips both conversions. It draws noticeably less power for the same performance. If you are running off a portable power station rather than shore power, this is the difference between comfortable and constantly worrying about your battery.
The cable I use is the STARGEAR Starlink Mini cable, an 18AWG, 140W USB-C to DC cable with a waterproof connector. That power rating gives it headroom over the Mini’s actual draw, which matters more than it sounds like it should. A cable that’s only just rated for the load runs warmer and loses more to resistance than one with margin to spare.

Mine is mounted flat on the camper roof. Not tilted, not aimed, not adjusted per site. Flat.
Every guide will tell you to optimize your dish angle for maximum satellites in view. In practice, I have not found it worth the effort. Flat-mounted on the roof I typically see somewhere between 100 and 300 Mbps depending on conditions. That is more than enough for everything I actually do from the road.
The tradeoff I have made is deliberate: I would rather have a mount I never think about than squeeze out a theoretical improvement I would not notice. If you are choosing between a fiddly optimized mount and a permanent flat one, take the flat one.

The thing that actually degrades the connection is overhead obstruction. Not mounting angle, not weather, not how far I am from a city. Trees.
Under dense canopy, performance falls off badly. In a somewhat open site, it works great. That is the whole rule. When I am picking a spot and I care about connectivity, I am looking for sky, not for a particular direction.
This is worth knowing because it changes how you choose campsites. A dispersed site in an open meadow will beat a nicer-looking pull-in under pines every time, at least as far as the dish is concerned.
Powering it off-grid
I run the Mini off a portable power station, either an EcoFlow or a Jackery depending on the trip, and I keep the battery topped up with a solar panel on the truck.
Combined with the USB-C setup above, this has been a reliable arrangement. The solar keeps up with the draw well enough that I am not rationing usage on a normal trip.
Would I buy it again
At $599, it was a considered purchase. At $199 to $299, it is an easy one if you spend real time somewhere without cell service.
The caveat is that the hardware is only part of the cost. You are also committing to the service plan, and that is the number worth doing math on before you buy the dish.
